US Media ranking: Russia world's second most powerful nation after USA

US News & World Report has published listing of world's most powerful countries. Ranking is conducted in partnership with BAV Consulting and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. United States was ranked as most powerful nation and Russia is second before China, Germany and United Kingdom. Countries that top the power subcategory in the Best Countries rankings "are the nations that consistently dominate news headlines, preoccupy policymakers and shape economic forecasts," the publication explained. Russia took 24th place in the overall Best Countries ranking. The list was topped by Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Sweden. The Power subranking is based on an equally weighted average of scores from five country attributes that related to a country's power: a leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances and strong military alliances. The Power subranking score had a 7 percent weight in the overall Best Countries ranking.

Incidentally, the United States, Russia and China are the leading nations in the Global Firepower (GFP) database, which measures potential conventional military strength. These three nations are also the world's top arms exporters, writes Sputnik News.
