US advises Ukraine not to submit resolution on peacekeepers

Special Representative of the US Department of State for Ukraine Kurt Volker said that the United States offered Ukraine not to submit a competing resolution on UN peacekeepers in response to the Russian initiative in order to try to reach agreement.

On Friday, during a briefing, answering a question whether the Ukrainian party intended to present its own version of the resolution on the deployment of UN peacekeepers, Volker said that the USA offered Kiev "not to represent a competing resolution" but "to try to reach agreement" and "agree on principles and elements" of the possible deployment of the UN peacekeeping mission within the framework of the Russian initiative.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he supported the idea of sending UN peacekeepers to Ukraine, but it can only serve for ensuring the security of OSCE personnel, peacekeepers must be on the demarcation line and in no other territories. At the same time, as Dmitry Peskov, the presidential press secretary, noted, Russia's position on the deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine is flexible.

Kiev believes that the UN mission should have a broader mandate and be located throughout the Donbass region right up to the border with Russia. UN Secretary General António Guterres, commenting on the idea of introducing peacekeepers in Donbass to protect the OSCE mission said that if the agreement on this issue was reached, the organizations would be ready to do everything to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
