Ukraine not ready for NATO – Volker

Special Representative of the US Department of State for Ukraine Kurt Volker believes that Ukraine and Georgia are not ready to join NATO. He stated this in an interview with Ukrainian publication UNIAN.

"Both of them (Ukraine and Georgia) had to do a lot of work, and now there is still a lot to do for both countries," he said.

The diplomat noted that the US planned to provide Ukraine and Georgia with an action plan for NATO membership back in 2008, but then these states were not ready to join the alliance. According to Volker, a number of NATO member countries opposed this step, not wishing to give guarantees to Kiev.

On Saturday it became known that the President of Ukraine Pyotr Poroshenko wrote to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg a letter in which he asked for an action plan on the country's membership in the alliance. Earlier, First Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Irina Gerashchenko, said that NATO recognized Ukraine as an "aspirant country" within the alliance.

The Verkhovna Rada in December 2014 amended the two laws, abandoning the non-bloc status of the state. In June 2016, additional changes were adopted that determine the entry into NATO of the goal of the country's foreign policy. Ukraine also must by 2020 ensure full compatibility of its armed forces with the armies of the alliance countries.
