The people of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics may receive Russian passports. The member of the the State Duma international committee Sergey Shargunov told the news channel Russia Today about such a proposal being preparing. He stated that an interfactional "Donbass' friends Group" is to work on the proposal, the point of its establishment was raised at the State Duma session last week. The letters with the initiative are to be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Government of the Russian Federation.
A long overdue issue
Shargunov states that the interfactional group is supposed to work three directions: to strengthen the humanitarian assistance, to develop cultural activity and to provide legal support. The deputy is going to launch a personal initiative concerning the latter point — to address the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Government of the Russian Federation so that all people of the Republics can get Russian passports at will.
Shargunov specified that this means handing over passports to the DPR and LPR citizens by analogy with their issuance to South Ossetia residents during the conflict in 1991-1992 (at that time this case was the Foreign Ministry’s concern). Russian documents will allow the DPR and LPR people travel around the world because now the Ukrainian authorities refuse to issue them documents and the Republics’ passports are not recognized in the world.
If there was a possibility, Donbass people would ask the official accession to Russia long ago since for them our country is a mother and Ukraine is a stepmother and really thousands of soldiers die saying Russia at their last moment. The separation referendum took place in 2014 and the accession referendum may be held, hopes Shargunov.
