SBU calls DPR leadership Ruban's accomplices preparing terrorist acts in Ukraine

The Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Vasily Gritsak claimed the involvement of Head of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) Alexander Zakharchenko and Minister of Revenues and Duties of the Republic Alexander Timofeyev in the preparation of terrorist acts in Ukraine. He stated this at a briefing on Friday, March 9, informing on the case of Vladimir Ruban, Head of the Center for the Liberation of Prisoners under the Officers Corps Public Organization, accused of preparing terrorist attacks.

"Ruban and the DPR leaders Zakharchenko and Timofeyev were going to stage terrorist attacks in Kiev," he said and showed a video in which alleged representatives of the DPR and Ruban were talking about weapons and ammunition that he intended to deliver to the Ukrainian capital from the territory beyond Kiev's control.

"We have managed to prevent large-scale terrorist attacks in Ukraine. Thousands of civilians, as well as individual politicians, officials and deputies could have fallen victims," the SBU Head said.

He said that the investigation had "weighty and sufficient evidence" of Ruban's being involved in weapons transportation and preparation of terrorist attacks.

"The work on documenting the 'Ruban group' took more than one month, and the data published today make only a small part of what the investigation possesses," Gritsak added. Earlier, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko instructed the Head of the SBU to investigate the case as soon as possible, taking it under personal control.

In addition, Ruban was entered in the base of the scandalous Ukrainian Mirotvorets ("Peacemaker") site.

"A terrorists' accomplice: preparation of terrorist acts in the territory of Ukraine on the orders of the aggressor country (Russia) and pro-Russian terrorist organizations," the website says.

Vladimir Ruban was detained by the SBU at the Mayorsk checkpoint on March 8 when trying to carry an arsenal of weapons from the Donbass territory beyond Kiev's control. Later he was charged under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - "Illegal handling of weapons," "Preparing for a crime," "Terrorist act", after which the court issued a two-month arrest warrant for him. According to the prosecution, he was preparing large-scale terrorist attacks, in particular, an attempt on President Pyotr Poroshenko and other high-ranking officials. The Head of the Center for the Liberation of Prisoners rejected the accusations, saying that his detention had been planned by the special services and noticing that he had no idea about the weapons in his car.
