Poroshenko believes Donbass law enables quicker arms delivery

The adoption of the law on the reintegration of uncontrolled territories of Donbass is an additional argument for providing Ukraine with defensive weapons by the West. This is stated in the appeal of the Head of the Ukrainian State, published on the website of the president in connection with the adoption of relevant decisions by the Verkhovna Rada.

"This strengthens the legal basis for the use of the armed forces and expands their capabilities in the region much more. This strengthens the arguments in favour of giving Ukraine defensive weapons," Poroshenko said. He noted that although the draft law regulates in detail the military aspect of Ukraine's behaviour in Donbass, at the same time he proclaims a "peaceful, political and diplomatic way" in the settlement of the situation in the east of the country to be key.

The Ukrainian parliament approved on Friday in the first reading the bill "On the peculiarities of the state policy on ensuring Ukraine's state sovereignty over the temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions." 233 deputies voted for the corresponding decision with 226 necessary.

The document was registered in the Verkhovna Rada by the President of the country Pyotr Poroshenko. In it, in particular, the uncontrolled regions of Donbass are called "temporarily occupied territories", Russia's actions are qualified as "aggression against Ukraine", and the president is given the right to use armed forces to liberate the territories of the east of the country. It was also amended, which later removed the reference to the Minsk agreements from the text.
