New President of Bulgaria recognizes Crimea as Russian and stands for lifting sanctions

According to exit polls, Bulgarian presidential elections were won by the former commander of Bulgaria’s Air Force General Rumen Radev, a representative of the Socialist Party, advocating for the lifting of sanctions against Russia. He won 59,1% of the votes.

“Without denying the line of the EU and NATO, he promises not to forget about national interests. And among them there is an obvious rapprochement with Russia. It was clear from Radev’s statements during the campaign. Firstly, the presidential contender advocates for the lifting of sanctions that have hit the agriculture of Bulgaria. Secondly, at the previous debate Radev recognized that the Crimea had in fact become the Russian territory, and people have the right for self-determination,” says Russian state TV.

According to preliminary data, the General’s opponent Tsetska Tsacheva, the candidate of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) Party, won 35,7% of the votes.

The country’s current Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has promised to resign in case of Rumen Radev’s victory.
