Alexander Hug: conflict in Donbass has unpredictable final

Principal Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine, Alexander Hug, described the current situation in Donbass as a "smoldering conflict" with an unpredictable scenario. He stated this at a briefing in Kiev.

According to Hug, OSCE observers recorded an increase in the number of violations of the ceasefire on the contact line.

"All these violations are nothing but a smoldering conflict, and no one knows at what stage we are now," the OSCE representative said. "We cannot ignore the facts and hope that the situation will remain the same. The gradual increase in the number of violations together with the presence of prohibited weapons and close deployment of forces and facilities are an alarm bell, to which we must take with all seriousness."

In this regard, the Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE SMM noted that all parties "must fulfill their obligations undertaken in Minsk".

Recently the OSCE special representative to the Tripartite Contact Group for Ukraine Martin Sajdik at a meeting with journalists in Minsk said that the number of violations of the ceasefire in Donbass for the past month has increased by 5%.

Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential press secretary, expressed fear that after the international observers, soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and extremists will enter the DPR and the LPR.
