"Without our past, we have no future" - DPR Head
On Monday, October 16, the Head of the Donetsk People's Republic Alexander Zakharchenko took part in the solemn opening ceremony of the monument to the Heroes of Donbass in Rostov-on-Don, the Russian Federation. The monument is dedicated to volunteers from Russia who joined the defenders of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.
The Head of the Administration of the City of Rostov-on-Don, Vitaly Kushnaryov, Vice Premiers of the DPR Dmitry Trapeznikov and Alexander Timofeyev, Chairman of the Donbass Volunteers Union Alexander Boroday and other honoured guests also attended the event.
"On my own behalf and on that of all the residents of the Donetsk People's Republic, I want to thank Rostov residents for supporting us in the hardest times. Many thanks and a low bow to all the residents of the Russian Federation," Alexander Zakharchenko said.
The DPR Head also thanked Russian volunteers.
"Brothers, thank you for the fact that thousands of people from all over Russia responded to our common misfortune in 2014. They stood shoulder to shoulder with us and fought. Today is exactly one year since the death of Arsen Pavlov (Motorola). A monument [to Motorola] has been opened in Donetsk today. He was one of the first to arrive in 2014. He came to defend those ideals in which he believed and with which he lived. Thank you," Alexander Zakharchenko addressed the audience.
All the volunteers who had deceased in Donbass were commemorated with a minute of silence. The monument was laid with flowers.
When talking to journalists, the Head of the DPR noted that preserving the memory of our heroes was the most important task of the state and society.
"Our task is to remember all those who fought for faith and truth, all those who died for our common ideals. Without our past, we have no future," Alexander Zakharchenko said.
