Attacks on Orthodox churches in Ukraine

In 2017, according to the Department of External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, 19 churches of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church were attacked by radicals. Since early 2018, there have occurred ten more such cases.

In particular, in early January 2018, the vandals smeared with red paint commemorative plaques on the walls of the Transfiguration Church in Chernigov. A little later in the Odessa region, unknown people left stickers with provocative content on the walls of churches.

During the Christmas celebration, about 30 members of the C14 nationalist organization blocked entry to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Radicals arranged a fight, and the next day spread in the media threats to the clergy and parishioners of the Monastery.

Later, on January 25, C14 representatives cut down an information stand near the chapel of the Desyatinny Monastery in Kiev. The nationalists accused the Moscow Patriarchate of "illegal seizure of the land" and the construction of a chapel near the archaeological site near the Church of the Tithes. The same night in the chapel there was a fire, Alexander Gorban and Alexei Shemotyuk were detained for 60 days on suspicion of arson. However, on February 5, the Kiev Court of Appeal released them.

In Kiev, on the night of January 12, unknown persons robbed and desecrated the church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God at the National Scientific Center for Radiation Medicine, they took out valuable things and threw holy gifts, prepared for the sacrament of patients, on the floor. On January 10 and February 7, the Pokrovsky temple of the city of Chernomorsk, in the Odessa region, was attacked by vandals. On February 3, fire was set to St. Vladimir's Church in Lvov. On February 26, unknown people staged a rampage at the altar of the Nativity of the Virgin church of the Molchensky convent in Putivl.
