Slovak Foreign Minister: it's too early to talk about Ukraine's membership in EU

It is premature to talk about whether Ukraine could become a member of the European Union in the future, said Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Monday, who visited Kiev late last week.

"Neither Ukraine is in such a position that we can talk about its membership (in the European Union) nor the EU is ready to talk about it, but it is important for Ukraine to adopt the European standards in order to use what it receives under the Eastern Partnership programme," said Lajcak, who is quoted by the Bratislava portal Teraz.

Answering the question of journalists, whether such a process with Ukraine would stretch as well as with Turkey, for a very uncertain period, Lajcak said that the European Union now is also developing and changing itself.
