On Wednesday, the State Duma adopted amendments that remove obstacles to the acquisition of Russian citizenship by former Ukrainians. The deputies allowed them not to provide a certificate of the refusal from the Ukrainian citizenship provided by the competent national authorities.
The corresponding norms were adopted by the lower house during the discussion in the second reading of complex changes in the laws on the Russian citizenship and on the legal status of foreign citizens in the Russian Federation. In particular, the declarative procedure is stipulated without providing confirmation from the Ukrainian side when renouncing the citizenship of Ukraine for obtaining a residence permit and a passport in the Russian Federation.
"A refusal of the existing citizenship of Ukraine is carried out by sending an application for the renunciation of citizenship to the authorized body of the state. The document confirming the refusal of a Ukrainian citizen from having his citizenship is a notarized copy of the application," reads the second reading.
As the head of the State Duma Committee for State Construction and Legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov explained, "it's impossible now to get a certificate [about renouncing citizenship] from Ukraine," and noted that "this is a well-known fact."
"A lot of people are waiting for the decision of their fate," he added.
