Rada puts paid to peaceful settlement in Donbass – Kiev envoy

The Verkhovna Rada put paid to the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbass. Viktor Medvedchuk, the head of the public movement "Ukrainian Choice", Ukrainian envoy to the humanitarian subgroup of the Contact Group, said this on Thursday after the parliamentarians adopted the law "On the peculiarities of the state policy on ensuring Ukraine's state sovereignty over the temporarily occupied territories in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions" (the law on reintegration of Donbass).

"The parliament, which long ago became hostage of the still unpunished radical groups and politicoes from the 'war party', with its own hands puts paid to attempts for a peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbass," the statement said.

According to the politician, from the very beginning it was declared that this law will serve reintegration - it will return Donbass to the legal field of Ukraine.

"Instead, there is a wide, fantastic, delirious and absolutely unrealizable set of dreams about the forcible return of territories. Only territories, not the people. And the spell about the 'aggressor' that deputies use apropos of nothing, does not carry any meaningful load, but serves only to push the law discriminating against citizens of Ukraine," he stressed.

Medvedchuk also drew attention to the fact that instead of the laws stipulated by the Set of Measures for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, "the Rada produces calls for a "war till the victorious end," offers cleansing, criminal punishment and even shootings 'collaborators' (the People's Deputy Oleg Musiy suggested this during the discussion the bill). As for the removal from the text of the document even mention of the Minsk agreements, this, in his opinion, is a demonstration "to the whole world that Ukraine does not intend to fulfill its obligations assumed in Minsk."

"I will say even more: the adoption of this law indicates that Ukraine is not interested in Russia, which performs a settling function, including within the Norman format, participating in the peace process," the politician asserts.

"Do people's deputies count on the influence of Germany and France, and maybe the representatives of Washington on the heads of the ORDLO [certain regions of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions]?" No! That is a deliberate attempt to destroy the prospect of a peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbass," Medvedchuk concludes.

Parliamentary bonzes cynically sacrifice lives of Ukrainian servicemen on the line of contact for the sake of their own interests. And this means that the conflict in Donbass will continue being a bleeding wound on the body of Ukraine, further dividing the country and making it impossible for Donbass to return to Ukraine and Ukraine to Donbass."
