Lavrov announces the talks with Tillerson on Donbass

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that in the near future he expected to hold talks with new US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, during which the situation in Ukraine and the relations between Moscow and Washington would be discussed.

Lavrov noted that Russia had already begun a dialogue with the administration of new US President Donald Trump, and it would be more intensive, as soon as all its parts were formed.

“I hope that not very confident sprouts of understanding what is actually happening in the east of Ukraine will strengthen,” he said in his interview to NTV channel.

Russia believes that there is no alternative to the Minsk Agreements, this is also confirmed both in the United States and Europe, said Lavrov, quoted by RIA "Novosti".

Lavrov also hopes that the officials of the US State Department, with whom it would be possible to discuss the situation in Ukraine and Syria, will soon be appointed. He reported that meanwhile the Foreign Ministry was in contact with those “who are now keeping the working rhythm of the US State Department”.

“But Tillerson’s key deputies are not appointed yet, and the key directions of the foreign policy are also not defined,” noted the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Earlier Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov did not eliminate the possibility that the meeting of Lavrov and Tillerson could take place at the Munich Security Conference in February.

Lavrov also said that he did not avoid the contact with his Ukrainian colleague Pavel Klimkin.

“The Ukrainians on the public front have already showed themselves in such a way that they are unlikely to stand aback without the strongest pressure from their western sponsors,” he said.

In addition, Lavrov noted that he talked with Klimkin during the meetings in the “Normandy format”. “To call and appeal to the conscience is to waste time,” said the Minister.

According to him, “the thing that the Ukrainians, including Klimkin, state in public every day shows that they want to bring themselves to the Russophobic corner from which it will be impossible to get out.”
