The UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass makes sense if it will contribute to the improvement of the situation of the civilian population in the region, Steffen Seibert, an official representative of the German Cabinet of Ministers, said at a briefing.
"Such a mission of blue helmets has not yet been created, it can be worthwhile if it will contribute to improving the situation specifically for people in Donbass," Seibert said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he supported the idea of sending UN peacekeepers to Ukraine, but it could only be about the function of ensuring the security of OSCE staff, peacekeepers must be on the demarcation line in Donbass and on no other territories. Kiev believes that the UN mission should have a broader mandate and be located throughout the Donbass region right up to the border with Russia. Also, Kiev rejects the possibility of direct negotiations with the Donbass defenders.
