DPR considers UN peacekeepers’ mission reasonable to prevent Ukrainian provocations

The deployment of UN peacekeepers to Donbass to ensure the security of the OSCE mission can be regarded as one of the measures to prevent provocations committed by the Ukrainian forces, stated the acting head of the DPR Foreign Ministry, Natalia Nikonorova.

"If the conditions and the possible places of presence in the territory of Donbass are coordinated with us, the deployment of UN troops as a protective force accompanying OSCE inspectors can be considered an additional measure for preventing provocations and the Ukrainian armed forces' and volunteer battalions' sabotage of the Minsk agreements’ implementation," Nikonorova said.

According to the Republic’s MFA Chief, the readiness of the Russian Federation to supplement the functions of the mission proposed in the Russian draft resolution of the UN Security Council demonstrates a desire to ensure the safety of OSCE representatives.

As Nikonorova said, it was due to the provocations by the Ukrainian forces that withdrawal had not yet been carried out in the third pilot section – in Stanitsa Luganskaya in Donbass. She also noted the necessity to continue the dialogue in the Normandy format.

"The OSCE SMM representatives are really going to need extra protection when inspecting weapons storage sites after the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops. At the moment, the situation with illegal paramilitary formations on Ukrainian territory is becoming more dangerous, the forces of radical battalions, in fact, do not obey the Ukrainian army and, therefore, pose a serious threat to members of the monitoring mission," she said.

Previously, the Russian president’s press officer Dmitry Peskov, answering the question about the possibility of holding a meeting in the Normandy format in connection with the proposal of Vladimir Putin to introduce a peacekeeping mission to Donbass, said that there no decisions on the Normandy Quartet negotiations had been made so far.
