OSCE SMM calls for opening new border checkpoints in Donbass

The Principal Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE Monitoring Mission to Ukraine, Alexander Hug, at a press conference in Lugansk urged the parties to the conflict in Donbass to open new checkpoints for civilians at the contact line.

By Kiev’s decision, an admission regime has been introduced on the border with the territories of the Donbass region beyond Ukraine’s control since 2015. One can enter or leave the DPR and LPR only through the checkpoints. Four checkpoints operate on the contact line in the Donetsk region. In the LPR, there is only the Stanitsa Luganskaya pedestrian checkpoint. There is no traffic in this sector, pedestrians cross the contact line using a wooden construction.

"We have long advocated the idea of opening additional entry and departure points in the areas of Popasnaya and Pervomaisk, Zolotoye, Shchastie... Now there is a chance that we can not lose - to help people return to their normal lives. We must call on the parties to open at least one additional control point of entry-departure," Hug said.

According to monitors of the OSCE SMM, about 6,000 civilians daily cross the Stanitsa Luganskaya checkpoint, providing for intensive traffic, their number can reach 11 thousand people.
