Official: Kiev and Republics negotiate new exchange of prisoners

The number of established detainees in Donbass is 37 from the Ukrainian side and 104-109 from the republics held by Ukraine.

This was announced on Friday by the representative of Kiev in the humanitarian subgroup of the Contact Group for the settlement of the conflict in Donbass, the leader of the movement "Ukrainian Choice" Viktor Medvedchuk.

"Today, there are 104-109 established people among those that the Republics are searching for on the territory of Ukraine. And there are 37 established people that the Ukrainian side is searching for on the territory of Donetsk and Lugansk. These numbers are the subject of the negotiation process, which does not stop for a minute," he said.

According to Medvedchuk, representatives of Donetsk and Lugansk believe that in the second stage of the exchange, it is necessary to apply the principle of "all established persons at all established."

"If we return to those figures - 104-109 and 37 - it means that such an exchange could take place even today, but the Ukrainian side is not yet ready to give its vision of this issue and the possibility of such an exchange," he said.

Therefore, "it's very difficult to talk about specific dates," the Ukrainian representative stressed.

"We are continuing negotiations on some intermediate exchanges, but I'm afraid that this is unlikely to happen," Medvedchuk said, recalling that in a similar situation at the end of 2017, President Vladimir Putin had to appeal to heads of the republics, so that they agree to a compromise with Kiev on the issue of the exchange format.

"Now the principles have changed a little, but to say that we found a common denominator for the release of people, unfortunately, I cannot yet," the leader of the "Ukrainian Choice" said.
