Air pollution level in Ukraine-controlled Kramatorsk reaches critical point

Pollution of air in Kramatorsk controlled by the Ukrainian authorities is estimated as corresponding to the crisis zone. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the DPR on the results of the meeting of the Joint Inspection on monitoring and control over the security status of enterprises and facilities in the part of the Donetsk region controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

"A regular meeting of the Joint Inspection took place. During the meeting, the issue of the negative impact on the population and the state of the environment, which is influenced by enterprises and facilities located in the Kramatorsk-Slavic industrial hub, was discussed," the report says. "According to the four-category scale of atmospheric pollution hazard in Ukraine (norm, risk, crisis, disaster), the level of air pollution in the town of Kramatorsk is estimated as corresponding to the crisis zone."

According to the expert opinion, in the risk zone there are settlements located at a distance of 10-15 kilometers from Kramatorsk - the villages of Yasnogorka, Sofiyevka, Krasnotorka, Shabelkovka, Aleksandrovka, Belenkoye, Malotaranovka, Semyonovka, Vasyutinskoye. According to available data, more than 8,000 tons of dust, sulfurous anhydride, nitrogen oxide and carbon are emitted into the town's atmospheric air per year.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, incorrect operation of treatment facilities is no less dangerous for the ecology of the region and public health. At that, all biological treatment products are discharged into the Kazenny Torec River. As a result, life-threatening substances accumulate in it - a high concentration of sulphates, chlorides, biological oxygen demand (BOD5), ammonium nitrogen, nitrates, iron, and petroleum products.

"The abstraction of water from natural water bodies in the territory of Kramatorsk has more than doubled recently, and the Gebel dam built in 1931 is badly worn and needs repair. The dam was erected in order for factories that are upstream to let in technical water, it raises the water level by 2.5 meters," the department added.

In addition, according to the data of the DPR Ministry of Emergency Situations, the polygons of solid domestic and asbestos-cement waste do not comply with the basic norms of environmental safety and operating rules, which is also an unorganized source of dust formation. Therefore, the issue of the circulatory system morbidity, which is critical for the region, remains topical.

We recall that the Joint Inspection on monitoring and control the security status of enterprises and facilities located in the territory temporarily controlled by Ukraine, was established by the decision of the Head of the DPR Alexander Zakharchenko within the humanitarian programme for the reunification of the Donbass people. It included representatives of all relevant ministries, departments and government services, as well as scientists and public figures.
